CHILDREN’S ALLERGIES: WHAT TO REMEMBER WHILE FEEDING AN ATOPIC CHILD

These foods are highly allergenic and should be avoided as a matter of principle: chocolate, all kinds of nuts, all shellfish, all fresh fruit in general and strawberries in particular, and corn and its derivatives.
Many foods are related to one another because they belong to the same family, and allergy to one member of the family often means allergy to the other members. Examples of foods belonging to the same family are listed below.
Apple: Pear, quince
Chocolate: Cocoa, cola drinks
Citrus fruits: Orange, lemon, grapefruit, lime, tangerine, kumquat, citron
Ginger: Cardamom, tumeric
Cereal: Wheat, corn, rice, oats, barley, rye
Melon: Watermelon, cucumber, cantaloupe, pumpkin, squash
Mustard: Turnip, radish, horseradish, watercress, cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower
Onion: Garlic, asparagus, chives
Parsley: Carrot, celery
Pea: Peanut, beans
Plum: Cherry, peach, apricot, nectarine, almond
Potato: Tomato, eggplant, pepper
Berry: Strawberry, raspberry, blackberry
Walnut: Pecan, butternut
Fowl: Chicken, duck, goose, pigeon, quail, pheasant

Mistakes are easily made because although the following foods look alike, they are not related to each other.
White potato and sweet potato
Grapes, plums, and apples
Coffee, tea, and chocolate
Fish and shellfish

Conversely, these foods are really related to one another but do not look alike.
Apple and pear
Peach and plum
Pea, bean, and peanut
Wheat, corn, barley, and rice
Cucumber and melon
Carrot and celery
