3. Indications for Use.

Diltiazem treatment is applied in case of treatment of stenocardia or disease of coronary vessels, as well as for lowering of increased arterial tension and for treatment of disorders of heart rhythm, such as arythmia.

4. Action

The medication lowers contractility of myocarda, as well as it lowers the frequency of contraction of cardiac and lowers the pace of AV conductivity. Diltiazem is used for relaxation of the vessels of muscles, which helps lower the peripheral vessels resistance.

5. Posology and Administration

The dose for start of treatment with Diltiazem is 60mg, which should be taken 3 times a day or 90mg, which should be taken 2 times a day. If the treatment proves to be inefficient, the dose can be increased up to 180, taken twice a day. The highest daily dose should not exceed 360mg per day. It is advised to take pills before meals without crushing them or chewing with a small amount of water.
Intravenous administration is also possible with single-shot dose of 300mg per one kg of body weight. In case of intravenous administration, apply 2.8-14mg/kg/min with the maximum daily dose of 300mg.

6. Counterindications

Problems with intracardial flow of blood, hypersensitivity to drug components, left ventricle heart contraction, cases of myocardial acute infarction, heartbeat retardation, evidences of aorta contraction, Wolff-Parkinson-white syndrome or Lawn-Gonong-Levin syndrome, period of lactation and pregnancy, compromised functioning of kidney or liver, childhood age.

7. Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…

The medication should be administered with caution in case of resetting rhythm of heart for patients, who have problems with functioning of vessels sanguimotion.

8. Interface with Other Medications

It is possible to use Diltiazem in combination with other medications only in case of doctor’s order. If you want to combine Diltiazem with other medications, consult your doctor.

9. Overdosing

Symptoms of getting overdosed: serious drop of arterial pressure, disorder of heart beat, block of intracardial and failure of heart.

10. Side Effects

Possible side effects include: dizziness, headaches, flushing, rashes of skin, fatigability. Rare side effects include vomiting, nausea, constipation, compromised functioning of liver, disorders of sleep, lower limbs edemas, nervousness. In case of use of Diltiazem in high dosages, as well as in case of intravenous administration it is possible to have bradycardia, donductivity disorders, lowering of arterial pressure, appearance of signs of heart failure. Administration of the medication for a long term in some cases may cause gum edemas.

11. Pregnancy and Lactation

It is not recommended to administer Diltiazem for pregnant or breast-feeding women, if there is no extreme need in it. It is not allowed to breast-feeding, if taking Diltiazem.

12. Driving

Diltiazem treatment causes retardation of psychomotor reactions, which can be a problem in case if performing activities, which require alertmenss and attention.
