Lamivudine/Zidovudine

  1. Indications for Use.

Medication is used for treating HIV-infections in adult patients and in children at age above 12 years, who have progressive immunodeficiency (less than 500/mcl of CD4+ cellularity).

  1. Action

Lamivudine/Zidovudine has the effect of inhibiting the changes in the healthy cells’ generic material, which contains the virus of human immunodeficiency. It prevents the cells from producing a new virus and lowers the amount of virus in the body.

  1. Posology and Administration

Lamivudine/Zidovudine has to be administered two times a day, with one pill taken in the morning and one tablet taken in the evening regardless of meals.

Counter indications for administration of the drug include disease of liver, disease of kidney, pancreatitis, lowered activity of tissue of bones (anemia – low number of red cells of blood; low number of white cells of blood).

Application of Lamivudine/Zidovudine medication can cause increased level of fat (triglyceride and cholesterol) in blood, may change the usual proportions of body (lipodystrophy, which includes higher fat deposits in breasts, abdominal zone, rear neck part, as well as in arms, legs and face) and diabetes.
If you feel unusually tired, visit your doctor as soon as possible, as well as if you notice that your skin is pallow, or if you have throat pain, tremors or fever as these can be signs of problems with bone marrow.
There is a chance of development of negative hepatic dilatation results in case of abrupt withdrawal of Lamivudine/Zidovudine treatment. Therefore, therapy should be gradually withdrawn, to not cause harm..
