- Indications for Use.
– active chronic hepatitis;
– uncomplicated cholelithiasis: dilution cholesterol gallstones in gall bladder, biliary sludge if there is no possibility to extract them by endoscopic or surgical methods; as a preventative measure for stone formation of relapses in post-cholecystectomy patients;
– toxic (accompanied by medicinal) liver injuries;

– non-alcoholic disease of fatty liver;
– alcohol-induced injury of liver;
– primary sclerosing cholangitis;
– biliary primary liver cirrhosis;
– atresia of intrahepatic biliary tracts (including inborn atresia of biliary tract);

– reflux-esophagitis and biliary reflux-gastritis;
– dyskinesias of biliary tracts;
– preventative measure for treatment of liver injuries during use of cytostatic drugs and hormonal contraceptives;
– biliary dyspeptic syndrome (in event of dyskinesia of biliary and cholecystopathy).
- Action
The medication should be taken orally, as this way it induces the gallstones cholesterol dilution in the gall bladder. It causes complete or partial dilution of gall stones cholesterol.
- Posology and Administration
Administration of the medication should be defined individually. In usual cases the mediation is taken in dose of up to 10mg per 1 kilo per day. It is recommended to take the medication as a single-shot dose in the evening. The treatment length should be set individually.
- Counterindications
– non-performing gall bladder;
– x-ray-positive gall stones (with high calcium content);
– gall-gastrointestinal fistula;
– acute cholangitis;
– acute cholecystitis;
– liver insufficiency;
– liver cirrhosis in stage of decompensation;
– obturation of bile passages;
– kidneys insufficiency;
– acute infection diseases of bile ducts and gall bladder;
– hypersensitivity to Ursodiol;
– gallbladder empyema.
- Should Be Taken with Precautions, if…
The medication should be taken with caution for treatment of children at age from 2 to 4 years old, as they might have problems with swallowing the capsules (other than this, Ursodiol does not have any limitations for use in children).
If Ursodiol is used for treatment of gall stones dilution, it is required to check the satisfactory conditions of the following: x-ray negative the stones should be cholesterol, the size of stones should not be more than 15-20 mm, functioning of gall bladder should remain and it must be not more than half-way full of stones, patency of both common bile and cystic duct should be maintained.
If Ursodiol is used for a long-term treatment, it is necessary to do U/S of bile passages.
Ursodiol treatment should be continued for at least 3 months after complete litholysis in order to provide the dilution of the remainders of stones, which can too small for detection and in order to prevent relapse of formation of stones.
- Interface with Other Medications
It is recommended to consult a doctor, if you are planning to take any other drugs during treatment.
- Overdosing
There are no known cases of getting overdosed. It is likely to have manifestation of diarrhea in case of getting overdosed.
- Side Effects
Vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, constipation or diarrhea, allergic reactions (skin itching, rash), compromised functioning of liver, calcination of gallstones, disorder of blood compositional, aggravation of psoriasis, backache, loss of hair.
- Pregnancy and Lactation
Ursodiol can be administered during pregnancy only if it is extremely necessary. If Ursodiol needs to be applied during lactation period, it is recommended to make a decision about stopping breast-feeding.
- Driving
Vehicle driving is not recommended during treatment with Ursodiol. It is allowed to drive vehicles only when Ursodiol is used for preventive treatment.
